Fishing Report

By Steve Cooke

Profile: Match Angler from Sheffield South Yorkshire Local venue Aston Ponds Time of visit 14th Oct to 17th Oct 2008 Time fished 10am to 6,30pm

I went to France with two friends who are avid carp anglers. I am not and as such I am a novice in this type of fishing.

I had spent three days on another lake without achieving a single run.

Despondent I went for a walk up the lane where, to my amazement I saw a guy who was the spitting image of Uncle Albert out of only fools and horses cutting the grass on a beautiful 4 acre lake. Naturally I asked if I could fish the lake and the next day I was fishing with my single rod for carp.

Uncle Albert real name Rod kindly offered to bait my swim with his bait boat and he changed my rig. Needless to say one hour later I was hooked into a 24lb mirror, which was the biggest carp I had ever caught. Rod kindly photographed the fish and gave me a print.

I was back next day this time Rod offered me the use of his three rods which I gratefully used as my tackle was inadequate for the job.

I caught an 18lb common and a whopping 33.02 oz Mirror which took 20 minute to land. Rod photographed the fish for me.

The next day I had another 24lb, 18lb and 20lb fish.

On the final day we had set up two rods when I immediately hooked a long fish weighing 34lb. If this fish had been deeper it would have been a high forty. It fought hard and long and made several screaming runs across the lake. No sooner had we returned the fish when the second rod screamed away. It was another 32lb mirror, (some fishing or what). Finally I caught a small common 18lb, well after the big ones one can get to feel this way.

I had a great time hear and on reflection I feel this lake has great potential to produce some really big fish. I fished during the day, but I bet anyone who fishes through the dawn, dusk and the night will bag up in big style.

Tips for the lake

Always use a bait boat

If you're not catching take advice from Rod the owner. He will always give you sound advice and assistance, and even help you select the right tactics.

The Facilities

4 Pegs (five anglers max) excellent pegs for bivvies.

No snags in the lake as roots in the edges have been cut First class kitchen with washer, First class toilets and shower. And most of all a great welcome from Rod and his wife Pat who really want you to catch big fish.

I had a great time

All the best
